Jeff Van Gundy is clearly an MMA Fan
April 13, 2009
The above clip is from yesterday’s Celtics vs. Cavs basketball game. After the Celtics’ Ray Allen nailed the Cavs’ Anderson Varejao where the sun don’t shine, ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy threw out this line (:30 mark):
“You see, right here, they should drop the cage and let them go. Put the gloves on them and let’s see who really wants to go at each other.”
Obviously, this is a pretty ridiculous statement for a basketball analyst to make. However, JVG is actually one of the few ex-coaches who could get away with it. He did, after all, attempt a single-leg takedown on Alonzo in the 1998 NBA playoffs.
What’s impressive is the fact that JVG used an MMA reference and not a boxing or pro wrestling. I bet he wouldn’t have said something like that, say, three years ago.
My, how far we’ve come.

I remember him mentioning Randy Couture in a broadcast one time.
