I asked Cecil Peoples, and he told me he scored that round 10-7 in favor of Helwani.

Good job man. I’m sure the 2 guys sitting to your right know their MMA, but they are delusional with regards to how important CBS to Strikeforce. Getting on CBS is not “nearing a tipping point” it’s still years from a tipping point. Anyone who sees a great fight on CBS will think “Huh, I wonder what other great fighters there are” and within a month will know that UFC is much better than Strikeforce. If they don’t turn on Spike at some point, they will hear it from their friends or from the internet. UFC is not in a dark hole because they are only on PPV.

Amen, AlexP. My thoughts exactly. You probably said it better than me. In this day and age, the facts are that if someone sees a great MMA fight on CBS, they will probably Google MMA or YouTube it, and then find out about the UFC.
Also, I have a hard time believing someone who chooses to watch a random MMA fight on TV doesn’t know what UFC is.
CBS COULD (love using that word) lead to great things, but it COULD also lead a promotion to give away all their best fights for free, and you know, not make any money via PPV buys. Last time I checked that is what the fight game is all about.

My goodness that was embarrassing – I hope you play this back to them and show them just how horribly wrong they all were.
Nice Job, AW.

That was funny as hell. You did good Ariel, but i thought it was messed up how they were acting as if Strikeforce was the next Pride because of the tv deal.
The fact is Strikeforce’s roster and Elite’s roster are only different because of Alistair Overeem, Cung Le, and Frank Shamrock. That’s not enough to claim Strikeforce has significantly better fighters, and they shouldn’t discredit the actual fighters of Elite XC. When you pointed that out the argument was all of a sudden “LOOK UFC GUY ALL WE’RE SAYING IS STRIKEFORCE IZ A GOOD ORG LOL”
The fact that most casuals refer to MMA as Ultimate Fighting shows that the UFC is damn near synonymous with MMA to the casual fan. A TV deal doesn’t erase that…I even heard casuals say last year “Hey did you see Kimbo get knocked out? They were showing UFC on tv the other day!!” The sad reality is that UFC damn near has a stranglehold on MMA right now, and if you think an org with a few good fighters can get a tv deal and all of a sudden contend with the PPV kings then you’re delusional.

Again, my thoughts exactly. The current Strikeforce is EliteXC v. 2.0 with just a couple of different names, and none of those names are going to get people to pay 50 bucks for a PPV.
I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who thinks that simply landing on CBS (and, by the way, I will believe MMA is returning to CBS when I actually hear it) means you are going to start rolling in dough. The fact is, bad management or not, it did nothing to help turn around EliteXC’s (mis)fortunes.

Cecil really is blind then. I would have stopped that on grounds of them not being able to intelligently defend themselves. It was like you were Evan Tanner ‘Versus’ 4 Phil Baroni’s. They’re all yelling, “that’s not what we said” and you’re sitting there dropping ‘bows to the domes! P.S. give Dani my number, she is looking hawt.

Good work Ariel, I agree with your assessment. This was primarily a argument about business, not mma. Essentially the UFC has built a small (initially) profitable niche business and is now taking it to a wider market (with great, profitable success). The problem with the other organizations is that their starting with a lower quality product and taking it to the mass market which doesn’t yield the revenues as the pay for view. Effectively 2,000,000 people who don’t care that much VS 2,000,000 who have invested $50. The return price point of $50 directly (50/50 split?) to the UFC gives them a huge leg up. Also the time buy on Spike I think was more about advertising for the UFC in creating a brand narrative for viewers and a vehicle for fighter development.
