The UFC On The Pages Of Playboy?

April 5, 2008

Word on the street, according Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, is that “Rachelle Leah of UFC All Access will be doing a Playboy cover.”

The moment I read this little nugget of testosterone I instantly thought: “What a strange choice.”

Now, we all figured it was only a matter time before the UFC and Playboy got in bed together (get it?). Both cater to the same demo and being associated with the likes of Playboy will only further solidify the fact that the UFC has gone mainstream. The bunny has certainly worked wonders for the World Wrestling Entertainment divas so it all makes sense from a business and exposure standpoint.

However, I find it strange that Playboy would choose Leah over, say, current Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste (and, by the way, since we are on the topic of Octagon Girls, why is everyone getting all heated and emotional about these lovely ladies on the Internet? Look around, there appears to be an abundance of weird commentary being written on this topic in the MMA blogosphere).

MMARated.com: Chris Horodecki V. 2.0

April 4, 2008

The mark of a true fighter (and champion for that matter) is how they respond to adversity. All’s well when the wins are piling up but once that fighter suffers his first devastating loss just how will he respond? That’s the question that looms over the Chris Horodecki-Nate Lamotte fight on tonight’s IFL card. With all due respect to Lamotte, this one’s all about the Canadian kid.

We all thought it would be a foregone conclusion that Horodecki would be crowned the IFL lightweight champion following his bout against Ryan Schultz in the IFL World Grand Prix Finals, however, in one of the biggest upsets of the year, Schultz shocked the MMA world when he defeated Horodecki in the first round. So, it’s back to the drawing board for the Team Tompkins member. Tonight we found out what he is truly made of.

MMA Rated Radio spoke to Chris about a bunch of topics:

* Is he over the loss to Schultz

* What went wrong?

* Has he studied the tape?

* How he dealt with the first professional loss of his young career

* What he will look to do differently in this fight

* His thoughts on Nate Lamotte

* His contract situation with the IFL

* Is he interested in ever fighting for another promotion?

MMARated.com: Meet One Of MMA’s Mosted Wanted Fighters

April 4, 2008

Jim Miller last fought on March 7th. Obviously, the IFL won out as Miller will be fighting on tomorrow night’s card against the very dangerous Bart “Bartimus” Palaszewski. MMARated Radio caught up with Miller just 24 hours before his bout to talk about a whole host of subjects:

* Why he didn’t end up fighting on UFN 13

* Is he happy fighting in the IFL after all

* His contract situation with the IFL

* Does he still hope to someday fight in the UFC

* His thoughts on Bart Palaszewski

* What we can expect from him tomorrow night

* How soon he would like a shot at the IFL lightweight title

MMARated.com: Cung Le Reflects On Saturday Night

April 3, 2008

img_8357-le-vs-shamrock-01.jpgYou’ll have to forgive Cung Le if he sounds a little tired during our interview. It’s tough being the new king of San Jose especially after earning that moniker following a grueling three round war against the likes of Frank Shamrock. Le impressed the entire MMA world this past Saturday night when he dominated Shamrock for fifteen minutes and eventually captured the Strikeforce middleweight crown after Shamrock broke his right forearm and was unable to continue fighting.

I had the pleasure of speaking to Le just days after the victory and among the topics we spoke about included:

* Has the reality of beating Frank Shamrock finally sunk in?

* Did he expect the fight to unfold as it did

* His thoughts on Frank Shamrock’s trash-talking tactics before and during the fight

* His game plan going into the bout

* Whether he knew he had broken Shamrock’s arm

* His thoughts on the end of the third round

* When he would like to fight next

* His current contract situation with Strikeforce

A Long Time Coming

April 3, 2008

i.jpgThe last time the UFC held an event in Colorado was on December 16, 1995, and while it took over twelve years to return they definitely made up for lost time with an explosive Ultimate Fight Night card. Stunning KOs, surprising finishes and a hot crowd made for another exciting night of fights courtesy of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Let’s take a look at the main storylines coming out of the show:

The Kenny Florian train continues to roll since his loss to Sean Sherk in October 2006 with a victory over Joe Lauzon. A great showing by Lauzon fighting in his first UFC main event but one has to wonder what kind of damage that cut on the top of his head did to his psyhce. I’m guessing not much since he had plenty of opportunities to finish Florian in the first round. J-Lau has nothing to be ashamed of as I think this fight solidifies the fact that his days of fighting on the untelevised fights are over for good.

So, Houston Alexander may not be the real deal after all. Who would have thunk it? Now, it’s one thing to get exposed on the ground by a superior BJJ fighter in Thiago Silva but getting knocked out by James Irvin in eight seconds is pretty devastating stuff. I wish Alexander would have also been a little more gracious in defeat. Remember how he claimed Keith Jardine didn’t rock him in their fight even though that was clearly the case? Same deal last night except he didn’t end up winning this one. Anyhow, good for James Irvin. He’s scored some notable wins over the likes of Terry Martin, Doug Marshall and Scott Smith but this has to be considered the highest-profile victory of his career.

New York Times Features Yuri Foreman

April 3, 2008

03boxing_650.jpgJarry Park resident, boxer Yuri Foreman, is the subject of a pretty interesting article in today’s edition of the New York Times. Here’s a snippet of what life is like as a practicing Jew and boxer:

“Foreman attempts to restrict his fights to weekdays.

If a bout lands on a Saturday, as was the case in June, he observes the Sabbath by remaining within walking distance of the arena. Wilson, his manager, said the sun had yet to set when HBO officials called for Foreman to make his way to the ring. He refused to do so.

“He pulled me into the corner,” Wilson recalled, “and said, ‘Please, let’s pray for five minutes.’ ”

I understand that some people might not care about this sort of thing but it’s a subject that is near and dear to my heart and I think that regardless of your faith it’s a pretty fascinating read.

Memories From The Park: When Lance Storm Was Born

April 3, 2008

It was on this day 39 years ago that the leader of the Storm Troopers was born. Here’s to you Lance!

I always enjoyed Lance’s work (partially because he hailed from Calgary…Alberta…Canada) and couldn’t help but feel a little sad for him when he retired from World Wrestling Entertainment without fully realizing his potential. Now don’t get me wrong, Storm had a tremendous career in ECW and WCW but his final run in WWE left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Obviously that is more the creative team’s fault but, I dunno, some of the storylines they had him participate in (see: “boring” and erection storyline) were just downright bizarre. It’s almost like someone had it in for him. Hmmm.

But this is a day for celebration, so in honor of Lance’s birthday I thought I would share a pretty spectacular video which stars the birthday boy as well as Chris Jericho. It’s a “Thrillseekers” music video and while I am not sure of the exact date when this ran on Smokey Mountain Wrestling I am guessing it was around fifteen years ago. Jericho even talks about it in his book. Needless to say, I would much rather remember Storm in this light.

MMARated.com: From The Skating Ramp To The Cage

April 2, 2008

Never heard of Mike Budnik? Well, obviously you aren’t a fan of inline skating and don’t have an eye for up-and-coming MMA talent. The former pro skater and X games veteran recently made the jump to MMA and, boy, was that a good decision as he is currently 6-0 and on the verge of debuting for a major promotion. If you’re curious to know where he will be fighting next just check out our exclusive interview with him.

Some of the topics we discussed were:
* Why he chose to make the switch to MMA

* Comparing inline skating to MMA

* How nervous he was during his first fight

* Starting over in a new sport

* His amazing knockout of Kenny Giddens

* Fighting on a live HDNet Fights telecast
