Matt Lindland Is Good At Keeping A Secret

March 19, 2008

Not only is Matt Lindland a great fighter but, man, that guy can keep a secret.

I had the pleasure of talking to “The Law” at a time where his name was very much in the news. Needless to say, I was looking for some answers.

We knew he had signed with a promotion we just didn’t know which one.

We knew he was planning on running for an Oregon State House of Representatives seat we just didn’t know why.

We knew he had recently talked with Dana White about potentially returning to the UFC but didn’t know what came of those discussions.

Well, two out of three ain’t bad. Lindland was more than willing to discuss his political career and his talks with White but his new contract? Hell no. I might have asked him ten questions regarding his new home only to be shut down every time. It felt like high school all over again.

Sure, we’ve all heard the Affliction/Golden Boy rumors but in a time where upstart promotions have press conferences to announce a big free agent signing only to find out five months later that said fighter never signed a contract (see: Global, M-1) we can’t really believe much these days.

Plus, Lindland told us that the promotion he has signed with is established and has been running shows for a while so there’s that.

We also spoke about why he left the UFC in the first place, Anderson Silva, the offer to appear on TUF 4 and his fight against Fedor. It’s an interesting one.

A Few Things I Hate…

March 18, 2008

1) St. Patrick’s Day drunken idiots

2) Unsanctioned fights (aka when people get drunk they like to fight)

3) Men who lay their hands on women

4) Men who knock ladies out with a punch

5) The snow

Amazingly, all these things are exemplified in the clip below. I have already confessed my love for all things fighting but this kind of behavior is definitely not my bag.

Words can not even describe how disgusted this makes me feel.

The Shamrock-Le Hype Continues

March 18, 2008

shamrock_cung.jpg

Elite XC and Strikeforce held a conference call today to hype their loaded 3/29 card headlined by Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le. Jake Shields, Drew Fickett and Gary Shaw were also available.

Below is the audio from the call. My two favorite parts were when Gary Shaw said that Ken Shamrock had “some sort stomach ailment” prior to the Buzz Berry fight and that the former “world’s most dangerous man” personally told Shaw he still wants a piece of Frank.

See promoter. See promoter trying to salvage what was once a big money fight.

Later, he said that “Frank Shamrock is hand-down, bar-none the best fighter in the world.” He also said that if Cung beats Frank then Le should be hailed as the best fighter in the world. This was in response to a question as to whether Shamrock believed Anderson Silva was the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.

Ummm…come again?

Listen, I get trying to build up your fighters. But I don’t understand making completely outlandish comments like Frank Shamrock is the best fighter in the world. We don’t believe it, you don’t believe it so why not just say he is a legend, a pioneer and all that good stuff?

As far as conference calls go I would give this one a six and that had nothing to do with Frank Shamrock doing his usual hard-sell job. Isn’t it funny how Shamrock tries to disrespect and insult Le every chance he gets yet Le continues to ignore him and never respond? I never really had any strong feelings about Cung Le prior to this bout but his ability to stiff arm Frank despite all his fabricated promotional tactics is quite fun to watch (or listen).

Elite XC/Strikeforce Conference Call – 03/18/08

Note: Shaw also mentioned that we should expect a press release tomorrow where a bunch of the fights for the first Elite XC on CBS card will be officially announced as well as the announce team.

A Legend Passes

March 18, 2008

derek_warrior_hart.jpgAs a wrestling-loving child I was always drawn to the talkers. You know, the guys who were able to sell a match or a feud on the mic. And while the business has seen countless eloquent speakers come and go none were better than “Playboy” Gary Hart (left). The former World Class Championship Wrestling star passed away Sunday afternoon at the age of 66.

Not only was Hart a great performer he also had one of the best minds in the business. The Chicago-native is credited for being one of men responsible for making WCCW one of the hottest promotions in the 80’s.

Surprisingly, there isn’t a lot of great footage of Hart available on the Internet but I think this clip paints a strong enough picture of his wizardry on the mic.

How Was Your Weekend?

March 17, 2008

It was a very quiet weekend at The Park and, unfortunately, that may be the case for the next couple of weeks. Busy times in the real world (i.e. work) so I really can’t complain but, that said, we may be a little light on interviews. Don’t worry though – plenty of me to go around!

On that note, let’s look at who enjoyed the best weekend of all:

10) Strikeforce – First, they land on NBC (forget the timeslot – this little train that could is officially a major player) and then they sign Kazuo Misaki. Not bad.

9) Jake Rosholt – Amazing power but I was expecting a tad bit more.

8 Eddie Alvarez – Another great performance in just his second time fighting in Japan.

7) Kala Kohole Hose – He finally gets his shot at the ICON Sport Middleweight title and, deservedly, wins it.

6) Johny Hendricks – Very impressed with Hendricks. Team Takedown is looking mighty fine.

5) Mirko Cro Cop – Welcome Back…I think.

4) Joachim Hansen – The winner of Dream.1’s fight of the night.

3) Tyler Black – A new ROH star is born.

2 & 1) Juan Manuel Marquez & Manny Pacquiao – If these men didn’t deliver the fight of the year I can’t wait to see what is.

Final note: I invite you to join the official JarryPark.com NCAA tournament pool. Let’s see which Park resident is the best guesser.

Pollock’s POV: MMA Is About To Get Crunk

March 17, 2008

c6292678-db82-24b2-08bf-00dead7288db-ironring_header.jpgSo what’s the deal with BET’s Iron Ring? Apparently, it debuts tomorrow and while no one is quite sure as to who will be fighting on the show(s) we do know which celebrities will be involved.

Combat sports luminaries Nelly, Ludacris and Lil Jon will be some of the familiar names “coaching” the fighters. What exactly will they be doing? Who the hell knows but I hope their roles are more Jim Cornette than Pat Miletich. You know, interfere in the matches, get their hands dirty – that kind of thing.

Anyhow, this week Live Audio Wrestling‘s and The Fight Network‘s John Pollock drops his POV on Iron Ring and, more specifically, some of their featured coaches.

John Pollock – 03/17/08

You can hear much more from John Pollock weekdays at 3 p.m. ET on Fight Network Radio on Sirius channel 186 or via Hardcoresportsradio.com not to mention every Sunday evening at 11 p.m. ET on Live Audio Wrestling.

Dan “The Beast” Severn Just Keeps On Tickin’

March 17, 2008

They don’t get much more legendary than Dan “The Beast” Severn (left). Seriously, I could have asked Severn eight hours worth of questions with regards to his MMA and pro wrestling careers but instead I settled on forty minutes. And, boy, did we cover a lot:

* Why he continues to fight

* When he expects to retire for good

* His thoughts on the current MMA scene

* Did he ever think the sport would become so popular

* The success of so many amateur wrestlers in MMA

* Lesnar-Coleman predictions

* Getting stripped of the NWA title prior to the first TNA show

* The biggest regret of his career

* His time in the WWF/E

It’s not often that you get to speak to a legend who has excelled in wrestling and MMA so it was obviously a great thrill to chat with “The Beast.”

Jarry Park’s Top 24 Wrestlemania Moments

March 14, 2008

Just over two weeks away from the big one. If you’re joining us in progress, click here for moments #24-21, here for #20-17 and here for #16-13.

#12: Honor Thy Wife
Wrestlemania VIII – Hoosier Dome, Indianapolis, IN
April 5, 1992

The Match: Randy “Macho Man” Savage vs. Ric Flair (c)

The Moment: For months leading up to this match, Flair had teased Savage that his woman, the lovely Miss Elizabeth, had been “with him” before she was ever with the Macho Man. Flair’s constant threats of exposing nude photos of Elizabeth following their match drove Savage nuts. So when these two legends squared off in front of over 60,000 fans there was much more than a title at stake. In the end, Savage captured the WWE title and shut the Nature Boy up… for the moment. (I may be wrong but I believe this match also marked Shane O’Mac’s WWF television debut. Try and find him).

#11: The Mega Powers Explode
Wrestlemania V – Trump Plaza, Atlantic City, NJ
April 02, 1989

The Match: Hulk Hogan vs. Randy “Macho Man” Savage (c)

The Moment: I think I’ll let the Hulkster and the Madness set this one up:

Hogan gets the nod for the better promo and also wins the match. Reminding everyone to NEVER mess with the Red and Yellow. Brother.

#10: Hell Freezes Over
Wrestlemania X-7 – Astrodome, Houston, TX
April 1, 2001

The Match: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock (c)

The Moment: In the late 1990s, no WWF superstar was more popular than Stone Cold Steve Austin. Part of his popularity stemmed from the fact that he was never shy to tell, or show, his boss, the evil Mr. McMahon, how he truly felt about him. I mean, who wouldn’t want to flip off their boss? So when McMahon decided to interfere in the main event of Wrestlemania X-7 everyone was pretty sure as to whom he would be helping out. The Rock, right? Think again…

#9: Sibling Rivalry
Wrestlemania X – Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
March 24, 1990

The Match: Owen Hart vs. Bret Hart

The Moment: Bret Hart actually wrestled twice at WM X (he defeated Yokozuna to capture the WWF title) but it’s his match against his late brother Owen that everyone will remember. The build to this epic encounter was unforgettable and by the time the reluctant brother, Bret, stepped into the ring with his jealous brother, Owen, no one knew what to expect. In the end, Owen came out on top but I can’t help but feel a little sad when I think back on this match that featured two men who had their careers cut way too short.

Memories From The Park: When Jake Rosholt Stopped By

March 14, 2008

jr.pngIf Pacquaio-Marquez II isn’t your thing and if you can’t find any illegal ways of watching Dream 1, you have another option for Saturday night in the form of the Xtreme Fighting League on HDNet. The main reason to watch this card is this will probably be your first chance to see the stars (and I do mean stars) of Team Takedown – Jake Rosholt, Johny Hendricks, Eric Bradley and Shane Roller – in MMA action. All former amateur wrestling greats, these men are expected to become champions in their respective divisions in no time. We featured an interview with Rosholt several weeks back and I thought this would be an appropriate time to run it again.

When it comes to mixed martial arts, remember the name Jake Rosholt. Why, you ask? Well, first consider his amateur wrestling background:

* Three-time NCAA champion. He won the 184-lbs title in 2003 and 2005 and 197 in 2006.

* Four-time All American at Oklahoma State University

* A Big XII champion

* Three-time state champion in high school

Then, consider the fact that he finished his rookie year a perfect 3-0 after winning two fights via TKO and one by submission. Finally, consider that the 25-year-old Stillwater, OK, native currently trains at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Mix that all together and you have, without a doubt, one of the brightest young Middleweights in MMA.

And here’s some good news: The Team Takedown member will look to continue his winning ways on March 15 in Tulsa, OK, when he faces Chad Jay (7-1) in one of the top matches on Dale Cook’s Extreme Fighting League event. If you can’t make it to Tulsa don’t fret as that card will air live on HDNet.

Rosholt stopped by The Park to talk about his affiliation with Team Takedown, why he entered the world of MMA, his upcoming bout and much more.

Who’s Sported The Greatest Mustache In Wrestling History?

March 13, 2008

Listen, it’s not all fun and games at The Park. Sometimes we’ve got to do some dirty work, break news and even provide our residents with definitive combat sports lists. So, with that in mind, we present the top 5 greatest mustaches in pro wrestling history.

On April 1, Triad Publishing will be releasing a book co-authored by Jon Chattman and Rich Tarantino entitled “The Book of Bert: High-Class Stars With Some Hight-Class ‘Stache.” Now, you must understand that since my entire family is from the Middle-East, I am well-versed in the art of the mustache. So, naturally, my first inclination upon hearing about this book was that I must purchase it right away. However, once I heard that a) the authors were wrestling freaks just like I was and b) they actually devoted several sections of the book to wrasslin’ I knew right away that I must speak to these geniuses.

Take a listen as Jon Chattman awards the top 5 ‘staches in wrestling history and even exposes some of the more unfortunate ones to sprout. I dare you not to laugh at least a couple of times while listening to Jon analyze facial hair.

Jon Chattman – 03/13/08
